october_2012_015.JPG (651169 bytes) october_2012_016.jpg (993234 bytes) It was with a sense of relief that I arrived at the Hatchery Stage, also known as the Bluegrass Stage, where the Voetberg Family Band had just started. Regretfully, I must report that the sound reinforcement was terrible. The Voetberg Family Band played two old hymns - "How Great Thou Art" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" - which I'm sure I would have enjoyed had the sound been good. The volume was way too loud for bluegrass and the bass overpowering to the point of annoyance. Basically, the soundboard was producing a festival "rock" mix for "front porch" acoustic music. Disappointing... and I felt bad for the Boetberg Family Band having to perform under bad sound conditions...

october_2012_017.JPG (644094 bytes) october_2012_018.jpg (668513 bytes) october_2012_019.JPG (629690 bytes) Being driven away from the Hatchery Stage by irritating sound reinforcement, I headed through the throngs with the Rogue Brewery as my beacon..

october_2012_020.jpg (392006 bytes) october_2012_021.jpg (327333 bytes) Having beat a hasty retreat to a relatively peaceful spot in the Rogue Brewery, I enjoyed a delicious Kobe Burger... which turned out to be the highlight of the day...

I went back to the Hatchery (Bluegrass) stage hoping that the irritating sound reinforcement had improved, but that was not the case. Spar Rib & the Bluegrass Sauce was playing. I have never liked "NewGrass," or "GroveGrass," or "JamGrass," or whatever it's being called. Though built around Bluegrass instrumentation, it's not Bluegrass and I don't care for it. These "Spare Rib" boys did play an instrumental version of "Jesse James" ("that dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard") which I quietly sang along to, but the sound reinforcement was still unpleasant - way too loud. I found myself wishing that Bob the Crossroads Soundman was twirling the knobs behind the soundboard. I sat there for about 20 minutes, looking over at my bike, thinking mostly about swimming, and soon skedaddled...

I had looked forward to hearing some of the Bluegrass bands scheduled for the next day, Sunday, but I was a no-show...
